Reports Basildon "B"

20th June - AWAY v Rayleigh 'C' - WIN 51:45 (5 League Points)
A very warm, humid evening on possibly the best green we have played so far, although as the cooler evening air moved in, the green slowed and turned noticably.
Rink 1 - Helen White, Heather Steggles and Mike Seviour (skip)
After winning the first two ends, we were always ahead, thanks to some well placed back woods by Helen and excellent bowling throughout by Heather at No.2 for only the second time ever! After leading 8:2 at the 7th end, a run of Rayleigh wins closed the gap to 10:7 by the 12th end. For some reason, both skips struggled with both line and weight throughout the game with only occasional displays of brilliance such as the 13th end, where Mike's 2nd wood found a way into the head to trail the jack gently into a cluster of three waiting Billericay woods! Four shots to us! Winning three of the remaining five ends allowed us to maintain a comfortable lead of seven shots right to the end.
Final Result 17:10, winning 10 ends.
Rink 2 - Gill Aggio, Colin Banner and Paul Maybury (skip)
A strange match! After Billericay won the first two ends, Rayleigh took control with a string of damaging scores, including a six and two fours to leave us trailing 3:17 after nine ends. Seemingly staring into the jaws of a crushing defeat, our team regrouped and began a heroic comeback, winning eight of the final nine ends to clinch the victory!
Final Result 20:18, winning 11 ends.
Rink 3 - Catherine Barrett, Roy Green and Dave Aggio (skip)
A similar story to Rink 2! Rayleigh won the first four ends to leave us at 0:11 with a huge hill to climb! Refusing to give up, our team dug deep and won five of the next six ends to close the gap to six shots. Helped by a further four shots on the 13th end, we were only four shots adrift. By this time it looked as if the bonus point was within our grasp and three shots on the 17th end all but guaranteed it.
Final Result 14:17, winning 8 ends.
A superb effort by the whole team - and yes, we DID get the bonus point! Well done everybody!

13th June - HOME v Pitsea Riverview 'B' - WIN 55:54 (5 League Points)
Rink 1 - Chris White, Colin Banner and Paul Maybury (skip)
Apart from losing two shots on the first end, we were always ahead, winning seven of the first nine ends, including five shots on the third end. Steady scoring throughout the game.
Final Result 19:14, winning 12 ends.
Rink 2 - Helen White, Heather Steggles and Mike Seviour (skip)
A good start by winning 3 shots on the first end and one shot on the second, only to lose four shots on the third and two more on the fourth! After levelling the score on the sixth end, we moved into a lead which we maintained throughout. By the 17th end we held a seven shot lead. Did we relax a bit too much? Maybe, because we lost four shots on the final end, mainly due to a great shot from the opposition skip. Enough to worry us for the bonus point! Some good winning shots from all players.
Final Result 18:15, winning 11 ends.
Rink 3 - Lorraine Colla, Catherine Barrett and Roy Green (skip)
A tough match, in which we only won two of the first ten ends. However, when we did score, we scored heavily, including six shots on the 6th and 14th ends and four shots on the final end, which made for a respectable result.
Final Result 20:25, winning 5 ends.
Well done everyone - some useful league points!

9th June - Murrayfield Cup 2nd Round v Wickford 'A' - LOSE 48:84
This was always going to be a challenge as we were pitched against a Division 1 team. We weren't disappointed!! A pleasant, though humid evening on a decent green - one of the longest we play on as they have seven rinks.
Rink 4 - Helen White, Chris White and Paul Maybury (skip)
An excellent start, winning three of the first four ends. However, after that we were only able to claim three more ends, with Wickford scoring heavily in the final six ends.
Final Result 13:32, winning 6 ends.
Rink 5 - Heather Steggles, David Barrett and Mike Seviour (skip)
An ignominious start, losing nine shots on the first end! However, we partially redeemed ourselves with seven shots on the second end. Apart from winning four shots on the 17th end, the game was very much under Wickford's control.
Final Result 19:33, winning 7 ends.
Rink 6 - Catherine Barrett, Roy Green and Dave Aggio (skip)
The closest fought rink, leading 9:0 after the first three ends. Six shots on the 4th end brought Wickford back into the game and the match was close until the 13th end at 14:14. Wickford won four of the final five endsto take the match.
Final Result 16:19, winning 6 ends.
A good effort by everyone, but that ends our Murrayfield Cup for 2025!

5th June - HOME v Stanford Le Hope - LOSE 42:44 (2 League Points)
Thanks to Dave Aggio for standing in at very short notice. Difficult to write a detailed report when I couldn't be there, so here are the bald facts....
Rink 1 - Helen White, Dave Aggio and David Barrett (skip)
Leading 5:0 after the first three ends, lost eight shots over the next five ends to be trailing by two shots after nine ends. Level scoring for the rest of the game.
Final Result 13:15, winning 9 ends.
Rink 2 - Chris White, Colin Banner and Paul Maybury (skip)
Steady scoring throughout the game, only losing five ends. The match ended with a dead end.
Final Result 15:9, winning 12 ends.
Rink 3 - Lorraine Colla, Catherine Barrett and Roy Green (skip)
An even match in terms of ends won and level at 11:11 after twelve ends but losses of two shots on ends 13, 16 and 17, and three shots on the final end gave SLH the win.
Final Result 14:20, winning 9 ends.
Well done!

29th May - AWAY v Carreras 'B' - LOSE 39:47 (1 League Point)
A fine dry, humid evening. The green was spongy and VERY heavy, proving challenging for some bowlers on long jacks.
Rink 2 - Catherine Barrett, Winston Lansiquot and Dave Aggio (skip)
An evenly matched game of three parts! Carreras had the edge for the first six ends, before we levelled the score at 4:4 and took the lead, building up to be 11:6 up by the 12th end. For the final six ends, Carreras once again took the initiative, levelling the score at 12:12 with one end to play. Our opponents won the final end by a single shot to take the win.
Final Result 12:13, winning 8 ends.
Rink 3 - Chris White, Gill Aggio & Paul Maybury (skip)
Level at 2:2 after two ends, Carreras chipped away with a string of single shot wins to lead 3:7 after eight ends. Five shots on the 9th end momentarily gave us the lead, before Carreras continued their run, allowing us to score only two shots in the last nine ends.
Final Result 10:17, winning 5 ends.
Rink 4 - Helen White, Davis Barrett & Mike Seviour (skip)
After we won single shots on the first two ends, Carreras responded with four shots on the third end to take the lead. We remained in touch and by the 13th end were only one shot adrift at 9:10. Carreras won two shots on the 14th end, followed by three shots on the 15th and another two shot on the 17th end - score now 10:17 to Carreras with one end to play. On the final end (a medium length jack), Helen positioned two woods only just short of the jack. The opposition lead was uncharacteristically short with all three woods. David followed up with three good shots, so with just the skips to play, we were holding five shots! No pressure then!! Mike managed to get two shots into the head, giving us seven shots, enough to tie the game! PHEW!!!
Final Result 17:17, winning 9 ends.
Well done everybody!

22nd May - AWAY v Brentwood - LOSE 39:75 (2 League Points)
A fine dry, but chilly evening. The green was wet and heavy, proving challenging for some bowlers on long jacks.
We were up against a strong Brentwood team, somewhat different from their team which we comprehensively beat in our home match against them - in fact, only two members of this Brentwood team played in our previous meeting, indicating that they must have far more players from which to select a team.
Rink 8 - Catherine Barrett, Roy Green and Dave Aggio (skip)
A very tough game, losing nine of the first ten ends to be 1:18 down. A brief revival, in which we scored most of our points (including a two, a three and a four) in ends 11-16 allowed us to reach double figures but the deficit was too great to overcome.
Final Result 11:33, winning 5 ends.
Rink 9 - Helen White, David Barrett & Mike Seviour (skip)
After losing a single shot on the first end, we began a run of successes, winning the next eight ends to lead 12:1 after nine ends. Brentwood won the 10th and 11th ends and began a policy of very long jacks, which made it difficult for us. However, when their lead bowler cast the jack into the ditch, we were able to shorten it to a length which better suited us. We won all but three of the remaining ends, finishing with four shots on the 18th end.
Final Result 20:9, winning 12 ends.
Rink 10 - Gill Aggio, Winston Lansiquot & Paul Maybury (skip)
Another very tough game against strong opposition. After winning two of the first three ends, Brentwood began a string of winning ends with big scores, leaving us 6:20 down after nine ends. We were only able to win two further ends, finishing with a loss of five shots on the final end.
Final Result 8:33, winning 4 ends.
Well done team. A valiant effort against a very strong team in which the end result really didn't reflect the quality of much of our play.

19th May - Murrayfield Cup 1st Round v South Benfleet & Canvey Island
WIN 43 v 35
A fine dry evening with the a good, although sometimes unpredictable green.
Rink 1 - Gill Aggio, Winston Lansiquot & Paul Maybury (skip)
Apart from the first end, we were ahead 9:2 after six ends, although the opposition started to catch up by winning ends 7, 8 & 9. Sadly, with the score 9:7 to Billericay, this game had to be abandoned due to a member of the opposition having to withdraw for personal reasons. Under the rules, SB&CI conceded this rink.
Final Result 10:0.
Rink 4 - Heather Steggles, David Barrett & Mike Seviour (skip)
An evenly matched game. Following a dead end on the 5th end, we scored five shots on the 6th end, before the opposition caught up with four shots on the 7th. After nine ends the score was level at 11:11. Thanks largely to a spell of accurate lead bowling by Heather, we built up a lead of five shots by the 16th end, only to lose seven shots over the final two ends, both of which had impossibly tight heads!
Final Result 18:20, winning 9 ends.
Rink 5 - Helen White, Catherine Barrett & Dave Aggio (skip)
A strong start, including five shots on the third end to be ahead 12:4 after nine ends. The opposition won seven of the final nine ends, including a single on the final end, to result in a draw.
Final Result 15:15, winning 7 ends.
Well done team! Faced with a team which plays in Division 2 of the league, we could easily have felt apprehensive about our chances but we held our own and there's every reason to think that we could have won even if one rink hadn't been conceded! Onwards and upwards. It looks as if our next round will be against Wickford 'A' (a Division 1 team) which will be an even greater challenge.

16th May - Home v Memorial Park - LOSE 46 v 60 (2 League Points)
Another fine dry evening with the green bowling well.
Rink 1 - Colin Banner, Paul Maybury & Winston Lansiquot (skip)
A tough game is which we were playing catch-up for most of the match. After losing five of the first seven ends, we caught up and two shots on the 8th end followed by three shots on the 9th brought us level at 7:7 after nine ends. Unfortunately, only able to win three ends in the second half and losing three shots on the 11th and 13th ends, four shots on the 12th end and five shots on the 15th end sealed our fate.
Final Result 12:14, winning 7 ends.
Rink 2 - Heather Steggles, David Barrett & Mike Seviour (skip)
An evenly matched game throughout. After losing two shots on the first end, we won four shots on the second end to take the lead which we retained until Memorial Park regained it on the 9th end. The scores remained close and were still level at 15:15 after 15 ends. On the 16th end, Heather trailed the jack to within one metre of the ditch to be holding two shots, but the opposition skip managed to defy the sloping edge of our green to claim a single shot! Grrrr!
Final Result 15:18, winning 8 ends.
Rink 3 - Helen White, Catherine Barrett & Roy Green (skip)
After winning just two of the first seven ends to be 3:8 down, a magnificent six shots on the 8th end, followed by two shots on the 9th end gave us the lead. However, scoring only one shot over the next six ends, we were 12:18 down with just three ends to play. Winning three shots on the 16th and 17th ends brought us level at 18:18 on the 17th end. A single shot on the final end secured a valuable two league points for the team.
Final Result 19:18, winning 8 ends.
Well done everyone. Although a loss, the outcome could easily have been different.

8th May - Away v Pitsea Riverview 'C' - WIN 56 v 34 (7 League Points)
A fine dry evening. A good green, although it didn't turn much on some rinks. Playing into a strong setting sun in one direction and long shadows made it 'interesting' at times!
Rink 1 - Helen White, David Barrett and Mike Seviour (skip)
An evenly matched game in which we led throughout except on the 6th end when Pitsea scored 4 shots to briefly take the lead. Although Pitsea only won 7 ends, they scored several threes and a four which kept them in the game right up to the final end.
Final Result 18:16, winning 11 ends.
Rink 2 - Chris White, Colin Banner & Winston Lansiquot (skip)
A strong performance, winning six of the first nine ends to lead 10:3 at half time. Our steady scoring continued through the second half to produce a well-deserved result.
Final Result 17:7, winning 12 ends.
Rink 3 - Catherine Barrett, Roy Green & Paul Maybury (skip)
Also a strong performance in which we allowed Pitsea to win only one end to lead 17:1 at half time. Pitsea recovered (proving it really does all change after tea!!) in the second half by winning three shots on the 10th end, followed by several two shot wins to make their score more respectable.
Final Result 21:11, winning 12 ends.
Once again, WELL DONE team!!

1st May - Home v Brentwood - WIN 50 v 49 (5 League Points)
A fine dry evening. The green was moderately heavy with long jacks proving challenging for some bowlers.
Rink 1 - Chris White, Colin Banner & Paul Maybury (skip)
A game of mixed fortunes, notable for intermittent heavy scoring by both teams. After 9 ends, Brentwood led 10-9, before Billericay scored 3 on the 10th to give us the lead for the first time. However, losses of 5 shots on the 11th end and 7 shots on the 13th end left us with an uphill battle which despite winning 4 shots on the 15th end, proved too much.
Final Result 18:27, winning 7 ends.
Rink 2 - Lorraine Colla, Catherine Barrett & Dave Aggio (skip)
After a worrying start, losing the first five ends, we then won the following five ends to be level at 7:7 after 10 ends. Steady scoring by both teams left Billericay leading 14:13 after 17 ends. On the final end, with just one wood remaining, Brentwood were holding 3 shots. Dave used his final wood to great effect by firing, giving us the final end by 1 shot!
Final Result 15:13, winning 10 ends
Rink 3 - Helen White, David Barrett & Mike Seviour (skip)
No heavy scoring by either team in this game, a feature of which was the tussle between David and his opposite number two as they continually matched each other shot-for-shot ! Brentwood won the first end before we pulled back level by the 4th end. A string of seven Billericay wins left Brentwood able to score only two shots betwen the 4th and 16th ends.
Final Result 17:9, winning 12 ends.
Well done team! An excellent start to our Division 3 campaign!
